A 45-year-old Chinese national, Mr. Mu Hua Qiang, has been arrested in Anambra State for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

Qiang, a resident of Aguleri, was apprehended on Friday during a surveillance operation by operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) in the Aguleri area.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect had been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.

“The Anambra State Police Command, through its operatives attached to the SCID, Awka, on the evening of 22nd August 2025, received a suspected illegal Chinese miner from operatives of the OCHA Brigade. His statement has been voluntarily obtained, and he has been placed in lawful custody for further investigation,” Ikenga stated.

He assured that updates on the case would be made available in due course.

Illegal mining has become a growing concern in Anambra, with authorities intensifying efforts to curb unregulated activities that threaten the environment and security in the state.
