The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, urging Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, to work with Mr. Peter Obi in the alliance.

In a statement issued by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC dismissed Baba-Ahmed’s criticism of the coalition as his personal opinion, stressing that it does not reflect the party’s position.

Baba-Ahmed, during a television interview on Friday, had accused the coalition of “deceiving Nigerians,” claiming it lacked the capacity to rescue the nation from underdevelopment. He also hinted at running alongside Obi in 2027.

Responding, the ADC emphasised that the coalition remains a collective effort designed to present a credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The party noted that the alliance includes prominent leaders such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and Obi.

“These leaders united after wide consultations to put national interest above partisan divides and to provide competent and compassionate leadership,” the statement read.

The party recalled that Obi had publicly endorsed the ADC as the platform for the 2027 elections and stressed the coalition’s commitment to delivering leadership that prioritises the welfare of Nigerians. Obi, it noted, had repeatedly maintained that no single group could change Nigeria alone, calling instead for collective action to dismantle poverty and insecurity.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners,” Wayas said, while extending an olive branch to the Labour Party chieftain.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice. Since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” she added.

Reiterating its mission to unite the opposition around a transformative agenda, the ADC urged Nigerians to rally behind the coalition.

“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” the party stated.
