Two people have been confirmed dead and two others remain missing after a landslide and severe flooding struck the popular resort town of Gapyeong in South Korea on Sunday, following days of relentless rainfall.
The incident, triggered by torrential downpours, caused houses to collapse and vehicles to be swept away, adding to the growing toll from the extreme weather. The nationwide death count has now risen to 14, with 12 people still unaccounted for since the heavy rains began last Wednesday.
South Korea’s national weather agency reported on Sunday that the rain, which had earlier battered the southern regions, had shifted northward overnight. It is expected to taper off later in the day, with a heat wave predicted to follow.
Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, as emergency teams work to locate the missing and support affected communities dealing with the aftermath of the devastating weather.
