The flood incident at Oko Oba, in the Agege area of Lagos State, was caused by property owners in the community, according to the state government on Wednesday, October 26th.

Tunji Bello, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, stated this in response to a viral video clip, and added that all of the affected structures were on a drainage channel alignment.

“Contrary to popular belief, the area behind Abimbola Awoniyi Estate by Agric Road, Oko Oba, Agege has always experienced flash flooding,” Bello said.

“The photographs taken two hours after the rain demonstrated the culpability of the property owners who have limited the capacity of the Oko Oba channel by infringing on its setback, and the photographs also demonstrated the extent to which this setback has been turned into a refuse dump by residents as well as new constructions.”

Meanwhile, the Gombe State government, Wednesday October 26, received items worth millions of naira from the NorthEast Development Commission to help alleviate the effects of the flood disaster that ravaged some parts of the state.

The items, which included rice, mats, shade materials, blankets, and dresses, were presented to the state government at their Central Stores, in Bogo in the Metropolis by the Representative of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in the company of the Managing Director, NorthEast Development Commission.
