Judicial activities across Ondo State have been brought to a standstill following the commencement of an indefinite strike by magistrates, presidents of Grade ‘A’ customary courts and legal research officers over unresolved issues of judicial autonomy and welfare.

The strike action was declared by the Coalition of Magistrates, Presidents of Grade ‘A’ Customary Courts and Legal Research Officers of the Ondo State Judiciary in a notice dated January 2, 2026. The notice directed all members to embark on the industrial action with effect from Monday, January 5, 2026.

According to the coalition, members are strictly prohibited from carrying out any official duties throughout the duration of the strike. The directive bars them from reporting to offices, sitting in court, or issuing, signing, endorsing or authorising any court orders, processes or documents, either physically or remotely.

The coalition stated that the strike would remain in force until its demands for full judicial autonomy and improved welfare are met, stressing that it would not compromise on the issues. Members were urged to remain united, disciplined and committed to the action, with assurances that updates would be communicated as developments occur.

Videos and photographs from court premises across the state on Monday showed locked and padlocked gates, indicating a total shutdown of judicial activities in compliance with the strike directive.

The industrial action follows longstanding complaints by judiciary workers in Ondo State over poor welfare and deteriorating court infrastructure. Previous reports highlighted that court proceedings are often disrupted during rainfall due to the poor condition of facilities.

The strike notice was jointly signed by the Chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Ondo State Branch; the Chairman of the Association of Presidents of Grade ‘A’ Customary Courts; and the Acting Chairman of the Association of Legal Research Officers, signalling a united stance by key judicial officers in the state.
