The Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Benibo Anabraba, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Anabraba announced his decision in a resignation letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Ward 1, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. In the letter, he described his exit from the party as a personal decision and expressed appreciation for the political opportunities and exposure he gained during his time in the PDP.

“I appreciate the political leverage gained from the party during the period of my membership,” he stated.

Although Anabraba did not disclose his next political move, sources familiar with the development said he is expected to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments in Rivers State ahead of future electoral contests. The development follows the recent defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from the PDP to the APC.

Governor Fubara announced his defection on December 9 during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, describing the move as a gesture of reciprocity for the support and cooperation his administration has received from President Bola Tinubu since the political crisis that engulfed the state in late 2023.

Fubara’s defection also followed the earlier defection of 15 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, to the APC.
