The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has launched an investigation into allegations of impersonation during one of its examinations, following a viral video circulating on social media.
In the footage, a woman accused of writing the examination on behalf of a commissioner in Taraba State was interrogated. Another clip showed a man allegedly caught impersonating a bank manager during the same exercise.
In a statement signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, ICAN reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice, stressing that its assessment processes are guided by globally accepted standards of integrity. The body assured that anyone found culpable would face disciplinary measures in line with its regulations, adding that the outcome of its investigation would be made public.
Meanwhile, Taraba State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economy, Sarah Adi, denied sponsoring any impersonator. Speaking in a telephone interview, she described the allegation as an attempt by unnamed interests to damage her reputation.
According to her, the smear campaign began after her role in expunging ghost workers from the state payroll, which triggered resistance from some groups. She also cited the vandalisation of her billboard in Wukari as evidence of what she called “unseen hands” bent on tarnishing her image.
ICAN has urged the public to avoid speculation pending the conclusion of its investigation.
