The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a medical team of eight to ten members to evaluate the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and determine if he is fit to continue standing trial.

Justice James Omotosho gave the directive on Friday while ruling on Kanu’s application seeking transfer to a private ward at the National Hospital over an alleged life-threatening illness.

The judge said the medical team must also assess the adequacy of health facilities at the Department of State Services (DSS), where Kanu is currently being held, and decide whether a transfer to the National Hospital is necessary. He further ordered that the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, or a representative, be included in the team.

Justice Omotosho instructed that the team’s findings be documented, signed by its chairman and secretary, and filed in the court registry within eight days, starting from September 26, 2025.

Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), and the prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), had earlier presented their arguments before the court.
