Gunmen attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor Dr. Chris Ngige on Wednesday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
Sources said the assailants, disguised in police and military uniforms, opened fire on the convoy’s pilot vehicle, killing a policeman and seizing his rifle and uniform. A woman filming the incident on her mobile phone was also shot dead, while a shop owner who went to observe the attack sustained serious injuries and is scheduled for surgery.
The convoy’s escort leader, who was also shot, has undergone surgery and is expected to recover. The pilot vehicle was heavily damaged by gunfire. Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy during the attack.
Ngige’s former press secretary, Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the incident, stating that the former governor is ensuring that injured victims receive medical care and extended condolences to the family of the woman killed. The Anambra State Police Command has yet to release an official statement.
