Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has condemned the threat by US President Donald Trump to deploy American troops to Nigeria, describing it as a grave insult to the country’s sovereignty.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi criticised Trump’s statement as “profoundly disrespectful” and urged President Bola Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action in response.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” Gumi wrote.
He advised the Nigerian government to summon the US ambassador to demand an official retraction of the statement, warning that failure to do so should result in the severing of diplomatic ties with Washington.
“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime. There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance,” he added.
Gumi’s reaction comes amid widespread criticism of Trump’s recent comments suggesting possible US military action in Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians.
