The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sympathy to the governments and people of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica following the catastrophic devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the tragedy as heartbreaking and pledged solidarity with the affected nations.

“The Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have received with profound sorrow and deep sympathy the news of the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa on our sister nations — the Republic of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica,” the statement read.

Ebienfa noted that the images and reports from the region, showing widespread destruction, severe flooding, and loss of lives and livelihoods, were “truly heart-wrenching.”

He commended the emergency response teams in the affected countries for their “swift and courageous efforts” to provide relief under extremely difficult conditions.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation and friendship with Caribbean nations, the statement extended condolences to the families of victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Nigeria also urged the international community and partner organisations to rally support for Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica to aid their recovery and rebuilding efforts.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the governments and peoples of the Republic of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica during this period of immense adversity,” the statement added.
