Nigerian Music Icon Akiin Shuga Dies at 50

Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away.

The celebrated performer and founder of the Shuga Band died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50 years old.

Akiin Shuga, widely regarded as Nigeria’s Live-Band Grandmaster, was known for transforming event entertainment and mentoring a new generation of musicians.

His family, in an official statement, described him as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

Born in Ondo State, Akiin Shuga overcame polio at the age of five and rose to national prominence as one of the country’s most respected and consistent live performers.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, he established Shuga Band as one of Nigeria’s most prestigious live bands, blending mastery, grace, and mentorship.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s creative industry, celebrating his life, resilience, and immense contribution to live music.

The family has requested privacy as they mourn, noting that details of funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced later.

Akiin Shuga is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
