Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has signed into law a bill creating 29 new local government areas in the state.
Following the signing, the state government has forwarded the legislation to the National Assembly for ratification as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
According to documents obtained by journalists in Bauchi, Governor Mohammed assented to the bill passed by the State House of Assembly on October 28, 2025. The acting Deputy Clerk of the Assembly, Musa Yerima, subsequently transmitted the proposal to the Senate Committee on Constitution Review for consideration.
In a letter dated October 29, 2025, and addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Yerima stated that the new law seeks to establish 29 additional local government areas in Bauchi State.
“I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025,” the letter read in part.
He added that the new local councils will remain inchoate until the National Assembly enacts legislation formally recognizing them in line with Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution.
Yerima also confirmed that the law was enacted in compliance with Section 100(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
