The Federal Government has closed 22 illegal colleges of education operating across the country.
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) confirmed the action as part of its recent enforcement drive against unaccredited institutions. The commission said it also carried out personnel audits and financial monitoring in all 21 federal colleges of education.
The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to education regulatory agencies to clamp down on “certificate millers” undermining the credibility of Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, Tinubu—represented by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu—stressed that his administration would not allow the integrity of the nation’s academic system to be compromised.
He reiterated government’s commitment to strengthening coordination among agencies such as the National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the National Youth Service Corps, and the NCCE to improve quality and eliminate unrecognised institutions at home and abroad.
