Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that he will not contest for any political office in the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai made the announcement in Kaduna on Wednesday while receiving new members who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Aliyu Bello.
He explained that his return to politics was not driven by personal ambition but by a commitment to support credible leadership across all levels of government.
“My plan after leaving office in 2023 was to take a break from politics, but given the way things have turned out, I believe we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics,” he said.
The former governor criticised the present administration, saying Nigerians do not need further explanation to recognise its failures. He stressed that he has no interest in the Senate or any elective office.
El-Rufai said his current focus is to mentor young people, women, and reform-minded Nigerians, urging them to take ownership of the political process. He particularly encouraged youths in Kaduna to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“In Lagos and Osun, at least 600,000 people registered. But in Kaduna, only 60,000. Anyone who is 18 years old should go and register, even with their phone. Registration is what gives you the right to choose who governs you,” he added.
