The Ebonyi State Government has approved an increase in the minimum wage for civil and public servants from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, with immediate effect.
The decision was reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the New Government House, Abakaliki.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh, said the wage review was in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs Agenda, which prioritises workers’ welfare.
Omebeh added that the council also approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovative Centre. The facility, he explained, will enhance the state’s capacity in disease research, diagnosis, surveillance, and training to address public health challenges.
The development comes a day after Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State announced a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 for workers.
At the federal level, President Bola Tinubu had in July 2024 signed the Minimum Wage Bill into law, raising the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, while some states have since introduced higher wage structures for their workers.
