Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu. According to a statement issued Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Abubakar cited health reasons for stepping down.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Abubakar’s service. The Presidency is expected to notify the Senate of his replacement later in the week.
Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His exit comes as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency, with further details expected from the Presidency.
