Ibrahim Shekarau, Senator for Kano Central, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Shekarau during the plenary on Wednesday , defected on the floor of the Senate. Shekarau was a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, before his defection.

He had earlier moved from the All Progressives Congress to the NNPP.

His official defection comes just a month after he defected from the NNPP to the PDP.

Shekarau and his supporters defected from the NNPP to the PDP on Monday, August 29, 2022, citing alleged unfair treatment by the party led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, announced Shekarau’s defection through a letter received to that effect, saying the Kano Central Senator wishes to officially inform his colleagues of his defection.

Shekarau stated in the letter read by the Senate President that his and his supporters’ defection from the NNPP to the PDP was to pursue their political ambitions in a party that was friendly to them.

Shekarau was then welcomed by PDP senators led by the minority leader , Philip Aduda, and the minority whip, Chukwuka Utazi, who joyfully embraced Shakarau for defecting to their party.
