The Kwara Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students has vowed to stage a peaceful protest at the Kwara airport if the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike is not called off.

Mr Salman Issa, Chairman of NANS Kwara, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Ilorin that members were simply waiting for directions from the organization’s national secretariat.

Issa stated that once the national student body issues the order to the remaining 36 states, they would cooperate with the protest.

According to NAN, the Kwara NANS chairman was reacting to the NANS’s obstruction of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos in order to put pressure on the government to end ASUU’s seven-month strike.

Due to the walkout, the students’ national body had previously threatened to ground activity at local and international airports across the country beginning Monday.
Issa noted that the guidelines have so far only applied to NANS Zone ‘D,’ which includes the South West states.
According to him, the National President of NANS is using conversation and interaction with key stakeholders to resolve ASUU’s protracted strike.
“The protest guidelines are only binding on the South West states where the protest has been going on for the past five days.”
“When given a directive, we will follow,” he stated.

Speaking with NAN, Mr. Isaac Adeleye, General Secretary of Unilorin SUG, stated that the union is exploring the best potential ways to deal with the situation and that they are deliberating on it.
“We’re working with the NANS Kwara axis to see what happens next,” he said. (NAN).
