The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured chairmanship positions in 20 of the 23 local government councils in Rivers State following Saturday’s elections.
Announcing the results on Sunday, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in three councils—Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, and Port Harcourt City (PHALGA).
According to the official results, APC candidates emerged winners in Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akuku-Toru, Andoni, Asari-Toru, Bonny, Degema, Eleme, Emohua, Etche, Gokana, Ikwerre, Khana, Okrika, Omuma, Opobo/Nkoro, Oyigbo, Ogu/Bolo, and Tai.
The PDP recorded victories in Obio/Akpor with 328,823 votes, PHALGA with 235,054 votes, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni with 51,051 votes.
Legal Adviser of the PDP in Rivers State, Okachi Ordu, described the polls as “transparent and credible,” commending RSIEC for what he called the “freest and fairest election” the state had witnessed. He said the party had accepted the results in good faith and did not anticipate any litigation.
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), Prince Chibudom Nwuche, who monitored the exercise as an observer, also praised the peaceful conduct of the election. He commended the large voter turnout, early arrival of materials, and the absence of violence across polling units.
Nwuche urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to focus on grassroots development and governance in the interest of the people. He also lauded President Bola Tinubu for restoring order in the state through earlier interventions and acknowledged the role of FCT Minister and former Governor, Nyesom Wike, in fostering political stability.
