The Abia State Government has recruited 649 new health personnel as part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the state.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the recruitment at a press briefing, noting that the new hires are drawn from the 771 vacancies advertised in 2025. Among them, 432 nurses have already been deployed to primary healthcare centres being upgraded and operationalised across Abia.
Prince Kanu highlighted that the recruits include highly skilled professionals, such as a neurosurgeon who opted to return from New York to serve in the state, reflecting confidence in Governor Alex Otti’s leadership and health sector reforms.
He added that even after filling the remaining 122 vacancies, the Ministry of Health would continue recruiting to bridge gaps in medical personnel.
The commissioner also revealed that Governor Otti was recently voted the best-performing governor in the Southeast by the Forum of Academic Doctors, a recognition of the state’s transformation across sectors. Prince Kanu stressed that the state does not participate in such awards, which are independently granted by groups observing Abia’s progress.
