A United Airlines Airbus A321neo experienced a dramatic landing incident at Orlando International Airport on Sunday when its nose wheel detached during a storm-affected touchdown, temporarily shutting down the runways at the busy tourist hub.

The aircraft, United flight 2323 from Chicago O’Hare, was carrying approximately 200 passengers and six crew members when it encountered heavy rain and wind gusts exceeding 50 mph on January 18, 2026. Social media videos captured the plane hitting the wet runway, bouncing violently, and swerving before one of its nose wheels visibly broke off and rolled across the tarmac.

Emergency responders quickly arrived, and airport authorities imposed a ground stop, halting arrivals and departures and causing travel delays. Passengers were safely evacuated via buses, and United Airlines confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Eyewitnesses described the landing as “terrifying,” with a hard impact followed by a sudden forward lurch. The severity became clear when the captain announced damage to the nose gear while the plane remained stationary on the runway.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. Aviation experts are examining whether the failure was caused by the hard landing, pre-existing mechanical issues, or a combination of factors. Investigators will review flight data, cockpit voice recordings, and maintenance records.

United Airlines said the aircraft has been withdrawn from service for inspection and assured the public that safety protocols functioned as intended. The airline is cooperating fully with authorities.

Operations at Orlando International Airport resumed after the damaged plane was removed. The incident has drawn renewed attention to landing gear safety and airline operations under extreme weather conditions.
