Hundreds of youths in Bwari, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), staged a protest on Monday, calling for the removal and prosecution of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Babayola Muhammad Musa. The demonstration followed allegations that the DPO opened fire on residents during New Year’s Eve celebrations, resulting in injuries and arrests.
The protesters specifically demanded justice for Abraham Emmanuel, who reportedly lost an eye after being hit by a tear gas canister fired by police. Another individual, identified as Tasiru, was said to have been struck by live ammunition and later taken to his hometown in Katsina State for medical treatment.
Carrying placards reading “Justice for Abraham,” “End Police Brutality,” and “DPO Musa Must Go,” the youths accused the DPO of abuse of office, high-handedness, and extortion. They alleged that more than 150 youths arrested on December 31 were forced to make payments under the guise of bail, with evidence reportedly documented through bank transfer receipts.
One protester, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned that the FCT Police Command appeared to be planning to absolve the DPO of wrongdoing. “The Bwari youths have come together to demand justice for one of us who lost his eye after the DPO fired teargas at him on crossover night. The DPO is still in office, and we have information that plans are underway to absolve him,” the protester said.
The demonstrators vowed to continue their agitation, including occupying the Bwari Police Station, until their demands including the prosecution of the DPO and justice for victims are met.
