Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over his recent comments advising Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to seek security clearance before visiting the state.

Governor Okpebholo had linked Obi’s unannounced visit to a security breach that allegedly led to the death of three individuals. His remarks sparked criticism from various quarters, including opposition leaders, who viewed the statement as an attempt to intimidate political rivals.

However, speaking in Benin City on Tuesday during the commissioning of the newly revamped Edo Line transport service, Wike stood in support of the governor’s position, describing it as a reasonable precaution rather than a threat.

Recalling a similar situation in Rivers State, Wike said, “When Peter Obi was coming to my state, he notified me, and I provided vehicles and logistics for him.” He explained that such communication is vital for the safety of high-profile individuals, especially during politically sensitive times.

“As a presidential candidate, if anything happens to Obi during a visit, the blame will go to the sitting governor. So, what Okpebholo said was absolutely right. He didn’t say Obi shouldn’t come. He simply asked to be informed in advance so he could provide the necessary protection,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister also took a jab at what he described as performative politics, criticising politicians who engage in populist stunts. “People like to play to the gallery. This is not a place for a presidential candidate to be serving food. That’s just pretense. How long can you keep that up?” he asked.

Wike’s remarks come amid a heated political atmosphere as opposition parties prepare for the next electoral cycle. His comments appear aimed at de-escalating tensions and reinforcing the need for mutual respect and coordination among political leaders.
