The Kano State Police Command has charged 333 suspects to court for alleged involvement in violence during last Saturday’s by-elections in Shanono/Bagwai and Tsanyawa/Ghari constituencies.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this at a press briefing in Kano on Monday, listing the charges as criminal conspiracy, disorderly conduct, possession of offensive weapons, intimidation, and other election-related offenses.
He said the suspects also faced allegations of loitering without lawful excuse after voting, snatching or destroying election materials, improper use of vehicles, and soliciting votes on election day.
Items recovered from them, according to Bakori, included one bow, 23 arrows, seven catapults, 45 stones, 14 vehicles, two ballot boxes, 163 thumb-printed ballot papers, and cash totaling ₦4,048,000.
The police commissioner praised security agencies for containing the unrest. “Their professionalism and coordinated efforts were instrumental in preventing the violence from spreading further and helped to safeguard voters, election officials, and the public,” he said.
Bakori assured that the command remained committed to ensuring accountability. “We are determined to ensure that those who plan to disrupt the democratic process are held accountable,” he added.
