The Chief Security Adviser for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Nigeria, Mr. Senyo Kufe, has called for closer collaboration with the Nigerian military, particularly the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), to combat terrorism and other security challenges in the region.
Kufe made the call during a familiarisation and operational assessment visit to the Theatre Command in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of his nationwide tour.
Describing the Northeast as the “engine room” of Nigeria’s security operations, Kufe commended the professionalism of the Nigerian troops and their continued support for UN activities. He said the visit provided him with firsthand insights into military operations, noting that the UN’s work in the region relies heavily on military protection.
Also speaking, Mr. Udit Mehta, Area Security Adviser and Field Coordination Officer, North East, appreciated the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, for his leadership and sustained cooperation with the UNDSS.
In response, Major General Abubakar reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting the UN in achieving its mandate, stressing the need for strong civil-military relations and enhanced joint operations.
Both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration in emergency preparedness, information sharing, and security management, as well as expand joint training and coordination to improve safety for UN staff and military personnel.
The visit featured souvenir presentations, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph. Kufe was accompanied by UNDSS officials, including Security Analyst Mr. Christian Munteanu and Field Security Associate Major Nuhu Mantana (Rtd.), while senior OPHK officers, including Deputy Theatre Commander Air Vice Marshal Essen Efanga, were also in attendance.
