The Enugu State Police Command has filed criminal charges against a 29-year-old woman, Mrs. Chisom Okonkwo, for allegedly defaming her husband, Mr. Okonkwo Ozioma, after falsely accusing him of raping their two daughters.

According to police sources, the couple had been having domestic disagreements before Chisom reportedly raised an alarm accusing her husband of defilement. Ozioma was subsequently arrested and detained based on her complaint.

However, medical examinations conducted on the children reportedly showed no signs of sexual assault. “The medical report confirmed that the girls were not defiled, contrary to the mother’s claims,” a police source told SaharaReporters.

The source added that the children later confessed their father never touched them, saying their mother had instructed them to lie. “The first child refused to go along with the false claim and revealed the truth to the police,” the source added.

Following the outcome of the investigation, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police directed that Chisom be charged to court for criminal defamation and giving false information.

A two-count charge marked CM/861c/2025 was filed at the Enugu Magistrate Court, with the Commissioner of Police as the complainant and Chisom Okonkwo as the defendant.

The offences, alleged to have been committed between August and October 27, 2024, are punishable under Sections 325 and 154(1)(a)&(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

The first count accuses Chisom of defaming her husband’s character by publicly alleging he defiled their daughters, thereby exposing him to “hatred, contempt, and ridicule.” The second count accuses her of providing false information to police detectives, which led to Ozioma’s arrest and detention.

The case is expected to come up for hearing soon at the Enugu Magistrate Court.
