US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), seeking $10 billion in damages for alleged defamation and “serial fake news” reporting. The lawsuit stems from a BBC documentary that edited Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech to supporters, allegedly portraying him as inciting violence.

Trump claims the editing was false and misleading, causing “overwhelming reputational and financial harm”. The BBC has apologized for the edit, acknowledging an “error of judgement”, but Trump says the apology doesn’t go far enough. ¹

The lawsuit alleges the BBC’s reporting was part of a pattern of biased coverage, with Trump’s legal team accusing the broadcaster of a “leftist political agenda”. The BBC maintains there’s no legal basis for the lawsuit, citing strong US Constitution protections for free speech and the press.
