Former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly criticised Canada’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state, warning that the move could jeopardise future trade relations between the two countries.

Canada announced on Wednesday its intention to formally recognise Palestinian statehood, aligning with recent declarations by the United Kingdom and France amid intensifying global concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Reacting via his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “Wow!… That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!”

The former president has set an August 1 deadline for countries to finalise new trade agreements with the United States or face increased tariffs. His remarks signal that Canada may face economic consequences for its foreign policy shift.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that the recognition would be formalised during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, contingent on democratic reforms within the Palestinian Authority. These include the holding of elections and the exclusion of Hamas from any governing role.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned Canada’s decision, describing it as a “reward for Hamas.” The Trump administration, which has maintained a staunchly pro-Israel stance, continues to back Israel strongly in the ongoing conflict that escalated following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel.

Since the start of the war, over 60,000 people have reportedly been killed in Gaza, with humanitarian organisations warning of an escalating hunger crisis in the region.

Meanwhile, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, arrived in Israel on Tuesday amid growing international pressure on Washington to support a sustainable ceasefire. Witkoff is expected to visit Gaza aid sites as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The United States remains the only permanent member of the UN Security Council yet to recognise a Palestinian state. Canada’s move could further widen diplomatic differences between Washington and key allies like the UK and France on the issue.
