President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians in the Diaspora not to distance themselves from their homeland, saying the country is on the path of recovery and requires their contributions to achieve sustainable development.

Speaking on Thursday at an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), Tinubu said his administration is committed to building an environment where all citizens can thrive.

“I am happy to listen to you. I’m happy to report that many of our people are returning home,” the President said. “Yes, for economic reasons, some people might decide to stay away, but for the economic growth and opportunity available in Nigeria, don’t stay away. Your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?”

Tinubu stressed that nation-building must be a shared responsibility between government, citizens at home, and Nigerians abroad. He urged them to act as ambassadors of the country and project a positive image in their engagements.

“True citizenship goes beyond holding a Nigerian passport; it is about character and commitment to the nation’s progress,” he said, warning that negative portrayals of Nigeria discourage investment and partnerships.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, the President cited improved passport services, stabilised economic indicators, expanded healthcare investments, and policies aimed at attracting businesses and investors. “Leadership is about thinking and doing — blending visionary ideas with practical actions to drive stability, unity, and growth. Nigeria is on the rise again,” he added.

The President of the Nigerian Union in Japan, Emeka Ebogota, expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s direct engagement and pledged the Union’s support for the government’s reform agenda. Other members of the community, including professionals, entrepreneurs, and students, also pledged to contribute to the nation’s development.

Among those present were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji; Minister of Budget, Atiku Bagudu; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, as well as private sector leaders.
