The Labour Party Caucus in the National Assembly has condemned the assault on a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Miss Jennifer Elohor, in Anambra State, calling for immediate prosecution of those responsible.
In a statement issued in Awka, the caucus — comprising two senators and five members of the House of Representatives — described the attack, captured in a viral video, as “heinous, cruel and criminal.”
The lawmakers accused operatives of the state-backed vigilante outfit, Agunechemba, of carrying out the assault, warning that the group was increasingly usurping the roles of security agencies such as the police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
They urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to hold the perpetrators accountable, retrain vigilante operatives, and prevent further acts of impunity. They also called on the Nigeria Police to take over investigations to ensure justice is served, stressing that “no one can be an impartial arbiter in his own case.”
The lawmakers further alleged that the same vigilante operatives were deployed by the state government during the August 16 by-election in favour of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and warned against their use in the forthcoming November governorship election.
The statement was jointly signed by Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and House members Ozodinobi George, Afam Ogene, Idu Emeka, Oby Orogbu, Uche Okonkwo, and Anekwe Peter.
