President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for what he described as their strong effort in the race to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s playoff match.

In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged the players to put the disappointment behind them and immediately shift focus to preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to hold in Morocco from December to January.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second straight time after DR Congo defeated the Eagles 4–3 on penalties in Morocco.

Tinubu acknowledged the emotional impact of the loss on fans across the country but commended the squad for showing resilience, particularly after winning their first playoff fixture.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” he said.

The President called for a thorough reassessment of Nigerian football, urging administrators, players and stakeholders to address existing gaps and return stronger.

“Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” Tinubu added.
