Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has announced the appointment of Prof. Bond Anyaechie as its substantive Vice Chancellor, nearly a year after the reversal of Prof. Bernard Odoh’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
Odoh’s initial appointment was rescinded amid controversies over the recruitment process and questions about his academic credentials, which prompted objections from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the university’s Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria. The matter had also been brought before the courts.
At a press briefing in Abuja, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Olugbenga Kukoyi, described the selection process as “thorough and transparent” and formally announced Anyaechie’s appointment.
Prof. Anyaechie, a specialist in Medical Physiology and Clinical Measurement, brings nearly 20 years of teaching experience at the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He earned his first degree in Medicine and Surgery from Abia State University, Uturu, in 1998, followed by a master’s in 2004, a PhD in 2009, and a Master of Public Health in 2011.
He began his academic career as a part-time lecturer at Imo State University in 2002, later joining the University of Nigeria in 2007. He became a Professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurement in 2013 and has held administrative positions, including Deputy Provost of the University of Nigeria’s College of Medicine and Acting Provost at Imo State University.
