President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, and former Senate President David Mark were among dignitaries who on Sunday paid tribute to former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), as he marked his 84th birthday.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Babangida’s eight years in power, citing his role in infrastructure development, including the construction of the Third Mainland Bridge, and reforms that liberalised Nigeria’s economy. He also highlighted the establishment of the State Security Service, National Intelligence Agency, Defence Intelligence Agency, and Federal Road Safety Corps during Babangida’s tenure.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Babangida as a visionary leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s development “still stand tall despite the passage of time.” He lauded the former leader’s humility, commitment to national unity, and role in regional peace efforts, including the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago commended Babangida’s “bravery and patriotism,” noting the IBB Presidential Library as a testament to his dedication to history and education.

Former Senate President David Mark hailed Babangida as “a patriot who believes in a united Nigeria,” recalling his leadership in both military and political life as marked by courage and wisdom.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who visited Babangida at his Minna residence, said the former leader “stood out as one committed leader that wants the best for this country,” noting that his home “remains a political Mecca” for Nigerians.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described Babangida as “a voice of wisdom, moderation, and guidance,” whose legacy of service continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike.
