President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the full payment of all outstanding allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons, ahead of their final showdown against Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
This was disclosed in a statement shared via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Media Centre.
According to the statement, the President authorized the release of ₦12 billion to clear backlogs owed to various national teams. This includes up to 15 months’ unpaid salaries for senior national team coaches, as well as allowances and performance-related payments due to the Super Falcons, Super Eagles, other senior male and female teams, and the Under-20 squads.
The statement read in part:
> “The President has approved the payment of ₦12 billion in outstanding debts owed to Nigeria’s national teams across different sports, including the Super Eagles.
This includes clearing coach salaries spanning 15 months, allowances, and promises due to the senior men’s and women’s national teams, as well as the U-20 teams.”
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, confirmed that all entitlements, including those due for the WAFCON final scheduled for July 26, have been processed and disbursed for immediate payment to players, coaches, and officials.
He also emphasized that this move marks the beginning of a new era of accountability and timeliness in sports administration, promising that future payments will be handled promptly and without unnecessary delays.
The gesture also benefits other teams such as D’Tigress, Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, as they prepare for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
Meanwhile, this development comes as the Super Eagles gear up for their participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off later this month.
