Comedian Trevor Noah has announced he is standing down as host of The Daily Show.

The announcement was made by Noah at the end of his show on Thursday, September 29th, 2022, triggering shock gasps from the studio audience.

He expressed gratitude to the show’s crew and fans for an “amazing seven years,” stating, “It’s been wild, truly wild.”

He stated that given all that had occurred during his tenure as the show’s host, such as Donald Trump’s election as president and the COVID pandemic, he had come to the conclusion that his “time is up, but in the most beautiful way.”

While he acknowledged that hosting the show has been both a challenge and a source of immense delight for him, after seven years, Noah said that he feels like the right time has come for it to come to an end. He said,

“I realised there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages, I miss going to other countries and putting on shows. I miss just being everywhere and doing everything.”

Before relocating to the US in 2011, Noah started his career in his native South Africa, where he produced a number of stand-up specials and hosted a late-night talk show.

When he was chosen to take over the Daily Show on the Comedy Central network, he was still relatively unknown, but he has since gained international fame and won multiple television awards.
