Tension gripped the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Tuesday following the denial of access to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who arrived the premises in an attempt to resume her legislative duties.

A strong security presence was observed at the main entrance, where heavily armed policemen and patrol vehicles were strategically positioned. The main gate into the complex was locked, preventing the senator from gaining entry.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, arrived in a convoy that was blocked at the first gate. She later approached the second gate on foot, accompanied by a small group of supporters who chanted slogans in her support.

Her attempt to resume plenary comes after a July 4 ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which she claims nullifies her six-month suspension by the Senate. The development has triggered a face-off between the senator and the Senate leadership.

While Akpoti-Uduaghan insists that the court ruling mandates her immediate reinstatement, the Senate maintains that the judgment is merely advisory and does not override the internal rules of the upper chamber. Ahead of her planned return, the Senate had issued a statement warning her against entering the chamber, arguing that no binding court order had vacated her suspension.

According to Senate authorities, the final decision on her reinstatement remains within the purview of the legislative body.

The standoff has intensified debate over the separation of powers and the extent to which the judiciary can intervene in legislative disciplinary actions. It also raises broader constitutional questions about checks and balances within Nigeria’s democratic system.
