Nigeria’s Super Falcons have arrived in Rabat ahead of their blockbuster final showdown with the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place on Friday at the Olympic Stadium in the Moroccan capital.
The nine-time champions, led by interim head coach Justin Madugu, will hold their first training session later this evening at the FUS Académie in Rabat.
According to the team’s media schedule, the first 15 minutes of the session will be open to the press, offering a glimpse into the team’s preparation.
The Falcons are expected to hold their final training session behind closed doors on Friday to finalize tactics and strategy ahead of the crunch encounter.
Nigeria earned their spot in the final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa in the semi-finals on Tuesday — a match that was hailed as a clash of titans. Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie were on target for the Falcons, helping the team edge out Banyana Banyana in a tense and closely contested game.
On the other side, Morocco secured their place in the final after a dramatic win over Ghana’s Black Queens. The semi-final clash ended in a stalemate after regulation time, but the Atlas Lionesses held their nerve to triumph 4-2 in a penalty shootout, igniting wild celebrations among home supporters.
The upcoming final marks a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON semi-final, where Nigeria were controversially eliminated by Morocco on penalties after being reduced to nine players.
That loss remains fresh in the minds of the players and fans alike, adding an extra layer of motivation for the Super Falcons heading into this highly anticipated contest.
Coach Justin Madugu, who took charge following the exit of Randy Waldrum, has guided the team impressively through the tournament and will be hoping to crown his tenure with a historic 10th continental title for Nigeria.
Victory in Rabat would not only reaffirm Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but also serve as sweet revenge for their 2022 heartbreak.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8 PM local time.
