South Sudan has informed the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump of its willingness to receive a larger number of migrants deported from the United States, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing diplomatic correspondence and sources familiar with the discussions.
The move is reportedly part of a broader strategy by Juba to mend strained diplomatic ties with Washington, which have been affected by ongoing political instability and human rights concerns in the East African country.
In addition, South Sudan has urged the U.S. government to lift sanctions placed on one of its senior officials. While the individual was not named, previous U.S. sanctions have typically targeted South Sudanese leaders accused of perpetuating conflict or hindering peace processes.
The proposal signals South Sudan’s efforts to rebuild its relationship with the U.S. as it prepares for upcoming elections and seeks greater international support to address pressing humanitarian issues.
It remains uncertain how the U.S. will respond to the proposal or whether it will reconsider its current sanctions policy.
