The Nigerian Army has reported a significant improvement in security across the South-East, attributing the progress to intensified military operations and the imprisonment of separatist leaders Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa.
Major General Michael Onoja said crimes and criminal activities have declined over the past year due to sustained military pressure in the region and recent court actions against the separatist leadership.
He highlighted that the jailing of Simon Ekpa by the Finnish government, alongside the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja, has weakened the group’s operational capacity, limiting its ability to plan and carry out attacks.
“Crimes and other criminal activities have significantly decreased during the year following troops’ intensified operations across the South-Eastern states, as well as the recent court rulings against their leaders,” Onoja stated.
The army general added that the separatist group previously relied on targeting poorly manned checkpoints and security outposts, often killing security personnel and seizing weapons to execute further attacks.
Onoja assured that military operations would continue to consolidate recent gains, protect lives and property, and prevent the resurgence of criminal elements in the South-East.
