Austin Etim, a male nurse at the General Hospital in Calabar, was arrested by police for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl inside the hospital’s male ward.
The suspect, who was apprehended on Monday, November 14, after hospital management reported him and the Ministry of Health intervened, allegedly committed the crime over the weekend.
The 14-year-old (name withheld) was sexually assaulted by the male nurse while caring for her sick father in the hospital’s male ward while her mother ran around attending to other things.
According to hospital sources, the nurse tied up the victim with a scarf before assaulting her.
A nurse, who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard that “the girl said he ( suspect) hit her twice before penetrating while tying her hands with a scarf, as she lost strength while shouting, but the suspect overpowered her and had his way.
The crying girl reported the incident to the other on-duty nurse and her mother the following morning, which was a Sunday, and her mother passed out when she heard about it.
The enraged mother on recovery, called their pastor, who promised to come to the hospital after church, but the teenager’s mother abruptly changed her mind and said she didn’t want the case prosecuted any longer.
However, Vanguard reported that after several interrogations of the suspect, who denied any involvement, hospital management called the police, and the suspect was arrested.
When contacted, Dr. Iwara Iwara, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health (MOH), stated that the suspect had been suspended and that the hospital had been given 48 hours to evaluate the kid and submit a medical report for further investigation.
