At least 20 people have been confirmed dead and 134 others injured following a powerful explosion at an industrial facility in Russia’s Ryazan region, local emergency officials said on Sunday.

The incident, which occurred southeast of Moscow last week, reportedly began with a fire inside a workshop. Regional Governor Pavel Malkov announced the blaze on August 15 but did not disclose the nature of the plant’s operations or the cause of the fire.

Russian media have not specified what the factory produced, while authorities have refrained from confirming whether explosives, chemicals, or military equipment were involved. Emergency services said efforts remain focused on treating the injured and securing the area.

“Twenty people died as a result of the emergency incident,” the Ryazan emergency headquarters posted on Telegram. “There are 134 injured, of which 31 patients are in hospitals in Ryazan and Moscow, while 103 patients are undergoing outpatient treatment.”

The explosion is among the deadliest industrial accidents reported in Russia this year and comes amid growing scrutiny of workplace safety standards across the country.
