Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has assured Nigerians that the ongoing constitutional amendment process will be concluded without delay.
Abbas gave the assurance on Monday during the National Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, held in Abuja. He noted that the House was committed to breaking the cycle of failed amendment efforts by previous assemblies.
“As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” Abbas said. “We will engage the State Assemblies respectfully and transparently to secure their concurrence. We will also continue to work with the executive and with you, the people, to ensure that the amendment process proceeds smoothly.”
He commended Nigerians for turning out in large numbers to make their voices heard, stressing that the exercise would have a positive impact across all sectors of the nation.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, pledged that the review would be all-inclusive.
Also present was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented President Bola Tinubu. He praised the committee for creating a platform that engages citizens, civil society groups, political parties, professional bodies, and traditional institutions.
Akume reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through the constitutional review process.
