The remains of Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwu, were on Saturday, August 16, 2025, laid to rest in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman Chukwu,” was a former captain of Rangers International of Enugu, captain of Nigeria’s national team—the Super Eagles—former coach of Rangers, and later Technical Adviser.
He also coached the Kenyan national team and served as Chief Coach of the Super Eagles.
The funeral service, held at St. Philip’s Anglican Church field, Obe, drew dignitaries, sports administrators, and football greats. Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, in his tribute, described Chukwu as a humble and dignified man whose life inspired many.
“It is difficult to have met Chairman Chukwu without being inspired by his humility and simplicity. Without a doubt, he was disciplined, polite, empathetic, and dignified.
As a government, we will ensure that his legacies are immortalised because he loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart,” Mbah said.

The funeral concluded a 10-day programme of tributes, which included ceremonies in Lagos and Enugu.
Delivering the sermon, Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel Ike, praised Chukwu’s immense contributions to football in Nigeria and Africa. He traced Chukwu’s journey from his school days at National Grammar School, Nike, to his years as Rangers and Super Eagles captain, before his coaching career with Rangers, Heartland FC, and the national team.
Bishop Ike described him as “a strong man who led his teams to many victories during the golden era of Nigerian football,” recalling his role in Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON triumph which earned him the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR). He also highlighted Chukwu’s 2012 African Football Legend Award.
“Christian Chukwu was generous, compassionate, and kind. His name and deeds will continue to live on,” the Bishop said.
In his vote of thanks, Chukwu’s son, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr., expressed gratitude to guests for honouring their father’s memory.
Among those present were former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; Senator Victor Umeh; NFF President Ibrahim Gusau (represented by NNL Chairman George Aluo); retired Anglican Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma; security chiefs; federal lawmakers; Enugu State executive council members; and ex-Rangers players, including legendary goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala.
Christian Chukwu passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74 after a protracted illness. He is survived by his wife, four children, and grandchildren.
