On Sunday night, the presidential candidates of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore; the Action Democratic Party, Yabagi Sani; the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo; and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr Peter Umeadi, promised to retool the security architecture in order to address the country’s insecurity.

They also pledged to uphold the rule of law and eradicate poverty while concentrating on education development.

These were mentioned by the contestants at the Arisetv town hall for presidential candidates, which was held in Abuja.

The debate was co-organized by the Centre for Democracy and Development and many media groups.

Sowore stated that the intelligence agencies were not doing enough in terms of intelligence gathering, and that if elected in the 2023 election, his government would combat banditry, noting that fighting banditry and insurgency was not rocket science if intelligent people were in charge of the security agencies.

The AAC presidential contender also asked Nigeria’s government to address hunger and poverty before using weapons to combat insecurity.

Sani, the ADP flag bearer, said that the President, Muhammadu Buhari, presided over a corrupt administration, stating that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited was the country’s crux of graft.

Adebayo, the SDP candidate, cautioned politicians against using security services to pursue political conflicts, stating that a lack of effective security architecture has continued to undermine national security.

During the presidential discussion, Adebayo noted that the government has made a number of blunders in terms of public safety.

Umeadi, the APGA candidate, stated that if elected President in 2023, he will be personally involved in the affairs of the country.

He went on to say that it is not acceptable for individuals in Nigeria to continuously shift responsibility, and that it is especially not what should be expected of a Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
