Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and his equivalents from the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the New Nigerian People’s Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have each proposed remedies to the country’s ongoing strike activities by professors at public colleges.

They also vowed to raise investments in the education sector in order to reduce the country’s rising number of out-of-school children and to revitalise the health sector.

The contenders addressed the Arise TV presidential town hall series on ‘Education, Healthcare, Poverty, and Human Capital’ on Sunday.

Atiku stated that the government should engage with appropriate authorities to avoid a block in money designated for the education sector in order to terminate the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ repeated strike activities.

On how he plans to address the issue of out-of-school children, particularly in the north, Atiku emphasised the importance of increased financing and investment.

In his remarks, Obi bemoaned that the country’s investment in education is low in comparison to other countries, adding that the government needed to return to its agreement with the ASUU and develop a sustainable financing model.

Kwankwaso noted in his contribution that his party’s blueprint meets the problems expressed by ASUU.
