Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, have arrested a 62-year-old man, Bernard Odinchefu, alleged to be a key informant and extortionist for a secessionist-linked group in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Odinchefu was apprehended on October 1, 2025, in connection with an extortion network accused of imposing illegal levies on traders and families in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities, areas long troubled by separatist activities.

According to a statement by the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect coordinated the collection of monthly levies of at least ₦10,000 from traders and ₦100,000 or more from families planning burials. Preliminary findings revealed the funds were allegedly remitted to a “Commander” in a terrorist camp.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the arrest as a decisive move against criminal groups exploiting communities under the guise of secessionist struggle. “These elements are not freedom fighters; they are extortionists who prey on the most vulnerable in our communities,” he said.

Residents of the affected areas expressed cautious optimism, hoping the development would bring an end to the “pre-burial levies” and trader taxes that have burdened the communities for years. Security analysts noted that while Odinchefu may not be the leader of the network, his alleged role as a financial coordinator makes him key to unraveling the wider structure.

Police confirmed the suspect is in custody while investigations continue to track other collaborators and dismantle the extortion chain. CP Orutugu urged residents to support security efforts and report suspicious activities, assuring that the command remains committed to restoring peace and lawful commerce in troubled areas.
