The Gateway State International Airport, Ilishan-Remo, has been described as the most significant investment of the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration in Ogun State.
Chairman of the Governor’s Elders Advisory Council, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, made the remark during an inspection tour of the airport alongside other council members. He commended the world-class facilities at the site, noting that they compared favourably with leading airports around the globe.
“It is an excellent airport. I have travelled across the world, and I can proudly say what I have seen here today measures up and even surpasses a number of other airports. It is the best long-term investment. As it grows, its developmental progress will be so magnificent you cannot imagine,” Okuboyejo said.
He urged the state government to pursue approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to enable the airport to operate international flights, stressing that such a move would make the project self-financing and a major revenue earner.
Okuboyejo praised Governor Abiodun for delivering what he called the administration’s most enduring legacy. “Those who built renowned airports across the world are still remembered today, and Governor Abiodun will not be an exception. We, as elders, are proud to witness this in our time,” he added.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Gbenga Dairo, explained that the airport was conceived as an anchor project for industrial activities across the state, particularly within the Remo Economic Cluster. He assured that its facilities — including a passenger terminal, cargo warehouses, fire station, control tower, and independent power plant — were ready for use.
Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide, who conducted the elders round the facilities, disclosed that regulatory officers were already on site finalising processes for smooth operations. He confirmed that the first commercial flight from the airport would take off next Tuesday, with bookings already being made by passengers from Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, and other parts of the State.
