A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has expressed doubts over Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected president in 2027, warning that political pressure could derail the plan.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Sani said while Obi’s integrity was not in doubt, his supporters might resist the idea of a single term, particularly if his first four years were deemed successful.
“The Constitution allows two terms, so if his performance is strong, supporters will likely urge him to continue,” Sani said. “It’s a promise made, but may not be a promise kept.”
Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, declared on July 1 that he would not stay in office beyond four years if elected, pledging to “show the direction of good governance” within that time.
Sani added that the PDP’s better option would be former president Goodluck Jonathan, who, under the law, could serve only one more term.
