The House of Representatives South-East Caucus has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to behave like a leader and explore a political resolution to the issues surrounding Kanu.
Members of the caucus, who made the plea across party lines in a statement published on Tuesday, said the recent Court of Appeal ruling releasing Kanu provides an opportunity for the Buhari-led government to reconsider political solutions with the IPOB leader.
The South-East Caucus issued the request in a statement titled ‘Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Time to Win Peace,’ which was signed by Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Deputy Majority Whip of the House, and Toby Okechukwu, Deputy Minority Leader.
Also, the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers and Igbo Archbishops and Bishops on Peace and Conflict Resolution has requested Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate release.
The council’s decision was stated in a statement signed by Nnaemeka Achebe, head of the council; Chibuzo Opoko, Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia; L.O.C. Agubuzu, Chairman of the Enugu State traditional rulers’ council; and Valerian Okeke, Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha.
